History

I joined the SCA at O-Week in 1998 and started period fencing within two weeks.  I had previously been fencing mundanely for around five years.  I like fencing 🙂

On the 17th of April AS XL (2006), Their Royal Majesties Aedward and Yolande did elevate Caleb Adolphous to the Order of the White Scarf of Lochac. The scarf given to Don Caleb was a gift from Don François.

On the 12th of August AS XLI (2006), at the North of the Border Fencing Fest in Riverhaven, Provost Caleb Adolphous, sponsored by Lord Guildmaster Dameon Greybeard, and with the approval of the Body of Guildmasters, did play his Guildmaster’s Prize in the following weapons: case of rapier; rapier and dagger; rapier and parrying gauntlet; rapier and buckler; rapier and cloak; rapier and baton; and rapier. The candidate was examined by Guildmasters Silfren the Singer, Henry Fox, ibn Jelal and Edmund the Lame. At the conclusion of the forms, at the request of Their Excellencies the Baron and Baroness of River Haven, Provost Caleb faced Guildmaster Edmund in a final bout for the life of a hostage (played most ably by Provost Somerled of Redcliffe). The Guildmasters concluded that the candidate had most successfully played his Prize, and did raise Don Caleb Adolphus to the rank, privileges and responsibilities of Guildmaster in the Royal Guild of Defence in Lochac.

On the 2nd May, AS L (2015), Their Royal Majesties Kinggiyadai and Altani did elevate Caleb Adolphous to the Order of Defence as one of the 3 premier members of the Order.

At Fields of Gold X in Politarchopolis on 26 November A.S. XLVII (2022), I gave Leave and License to our Journeywoman Aliette le Liėvre to play her Provost’s Prize against all Provosts, Guildmasters and Guildmistresses.

The candidate commenced the Prize with a demonstration of the Application of Conclusions in Destreza. The candidate was then examined in the weapons forms of Rapier and Cloak; Rapier and Baton; Rapier and Dagger; and Rapier.

This was a physically challenging Prize in warm conditions, and the candidate took several breaks in addition to breaks between the forms. All examiners should be credited for their support in ensuring that the candidate continued the Prize in her own time, with no pressure to return to the field.

The examiners discussed the Prize in the presence of King Jayne. There was some discussion of the candidate’s  work with the Baton and some minor feedback on the use of the Cloak. The Provosts were encouraged to provide feedback to the candidate at an appropriate time.

All examiners were unanimous in their agreement that the candidate had met the requirements of the Prize.

Guildmistress Juliana provided her original Provost’s sash, which was presented to Provost Aliette by Her Excellency Anne de Tournais, Baroness of Politarchopolis, and by Their Majesty King Jayne Hunter.

History

I joined the Society at the beginning of 1990 and became a heavy fighter. Introduced mace fighting to Innilgard. I was Prince of Lochac from September 1992 to January 1993, during which time I became acquainted with Edmund the Lame and Francois Henri Guyon and rapier combat in the Society.

On the 2nd of January AS XXVIII (1993), Their Highnesses John and Gabriel did elevate Aylwin Greymane to the rank of Viscount.

Continued with my fencing interest, as well as heavy fighting afterwards. Heavy fighter trainer in Innilgard from 1995 to 1999. Edmund took me on as a fencing cadet in 1996 and the partnership continued on for several very productive years.

After The Ban™ I was coerced (1) into the position of Innilgard Baronial Rapier Marshal by ibn Jelal and others at Rowany in 2001, and I have stayed in fencing since. I am also a rapier trainer for the Barony. I have held the offices of Baron, Baronial Rapier Marshal, Captain of Archers, Chronicler and Seneschal, been (voice) Herald for the College of Saint Christina the Astonishing, and Lochac Seneschal.

On the 7th of June, AS XXXVIII (2003), Their Royal Majesties Cornelius and Morwynna did elevate Aylwin Greymane to the Order or the White Scarf of Lochac.

On the 25th of September, AS XLV (2010), Their Royal Majesties Edmund and Eleanor did elevate Aylwin Greymane to the Order of the Pelican for his service to the Kingdom.

On the 18th of June, AS LI (2016), Their Royal Majesties Gilbert and Bethony did elevate Aylwin Greymane to the Order of Defence for his prowess.

History

Maestro ibn Jelal joined the Society in 1992, and first got interested with fencing in 1996 as part of the effort by the Shire of Dismal Fogs to expand their activities. As luck would have it, the infamous West Kingdom fencing ban™ happenned about 2 months after they started! He started training again in mid-1998, when Peter Linich, Maestro di Scherma (aka Professor Pietro di Roma) started teaching SCA members at the College of St Augustine. Under this expert tuition, ibn Jelal went on to quickly move through the Guild ranks, playing his Journeyman’s Prize in midwinter 1999, and his Provost’s Prize at Festival 2000.

This Provost’s Prize was a watershed in Guild history, as he and Silfren both played their prizes according to the tenets of the London Masters of Defence. This was the first time anyone in the Kingdom had done so, and has since become the standard method for playing the prize. Festival 2000 also saw ibn Jelal step up as Lochac Rapier Marshal and go on to revitalise the Rapier Marshallate. Later that year, ibn Jelal, along with the other Provosts resident in Rowany, established the Rowany Guild School for the provision of structured fencing tuition to the populace of Rowany. The school is still thriving to this day.

At Rowany Festival (Easter) AS XXXVI (2002), ibn Jelal played his Guildmaster’s Prize against Ancient Guildmasters Francois Henri Guyon and Dameon Greybeard, as well as the Crown’s Courtier Michael of Castle Keep. The prize was played before HRM Portia, who along with the Guildmasters present deemed ibn Jelal worthy of elevation. Guildmaster ibn Jelal was the first and only Lochac Guildmaster of Fence to have played his Prize before elevation under the West Kingdom Guild rules.

On the 6th of July, AS XXXVII (2002), Their Royal Majesties Alfar and Elspeth did elevate Táriq ibn Jelal ibn Ziyadatallah al-Naysábúrí to the Order of the White Scarf of Lochac. The scarf given to Adib ibn Jelal was a gift from Don Tivar Moondragon, the first Don of the SCA.

Midwinter 2002, also saw Lochac become a Kingdom, and ibn Jelal now found himself the new Kingdom Rapier Marshal. Adib ibn Jelal was also the first Lord Guildmaster of Lochac’s Royal Guild of Defence, serving as the interim Lord Guildmaster from the formation of the Kingdom, until the formal signing of the Guild’s Charter by TRM Cornelius and Morwyna on 24th day of May AS XXVIII (2003). He then formally continued in the office as the Lord Guildmaster.

On the 12th of December, AS XLV (2010), Their Royal Majesties Edmund and Eleanor did elevate Táriq ibn Jelal ibn Ziyadatallah al-Naysábúrí to the Order of the Laurel for his research and teaching in the field of period fence.

On the 2nd of December, AS LII (2017), Their Royal Majesties Steffan and Branwen did elevate Táriq ibn Jelal ibn Ziyadatallah al-Naysábúrí to the Order of the Defence for his exceptional prowess and ongoing support of the fencing community of Lochac.

Reduced Armour Experiment Update

Important updates for all Lochac Fencers and Marshals!

Thank you to everyone who has been participating in the Inter-Kingdom Reduced Armour Experiment. Your ongoing reporting has been so valuable, and due to the data collected Society fencing armour minimums have been updated.

At this stage, our current rules (and current armour standards) remain unchanged, but we are in the process of incorporating the reduced minimums into our rule set at a Kingdom level.

The universe clearly saw my ‘at least I won’t have to update the handbook during my term’ as a challenge.

Reduced Armour Experiment

The Reduced Armour Experiment for standard rapier is continuing in Lochac. We have permission to continue with all three options as they currently exist, although the reporting form has been updated to capture results for reduced torso only.

There has also been a major update accepted by the SEM which is that the melee cap for R.A.E has been lifted. Lochac will be exploring this, but currently we are still at the 10 person cap (5 per side max).

Please make sure to continue to report when using reduced armour.

Greetings,

New Year, New Lochac Fencing Combat Handbook! Hopefully, all fencers are now familiar with the new version 6.0 of the rules which are in effect from 1 January 2024.

If you have not already done so, please make the time to read them prior to taking the field in the new year.

You can find them hosted on the Lochac Martial Rules Wiki – https://sca.org.nz/wiki/

Wishing you all a lovely 2024 – happy stabbing!

Announcements by the Lochac Fencing Marshal prior to Jan 2024

Below are the announcements made on the previous platform.

25 Nov 2023 – Important news – rules and new KFM

Good evening fencers! Two very important pieces of news.

1) The Kingdom Earl Marshal has selected Armiger Jude Oleksandr Donetsk to be the next
Lochac Kingdom Fencing Marshal. Please join me in welcoming and supporting her; she has
already been deeply involved as my deputy over the last two years and I know she will
continue our good works. This handover took place in court this evening at Fields of Gold
this evening, and the effect is immediate.

2) Version 6 of the Lochac Rapier Rules go live on 1 JANUARY 2024. Please make yourself
familiar with the drafts as they stand and have previously been distributed. A final
document version without tracked changes and with a few minor spelling and grammar issues
will be distributed in the coming days.

19 Mar 2023 – Reduced armour experiment – Reportable and non-reportable injuries

Good morning fencers, and in particular experiment participants.

Please remember that a reportable injury is where a fencer is injured and is unable to continue, or needs treatment from a health professional (4.4 of the Rules). An abrasion, bruise or small cut is NOT a reportable injury under this experiment, or our rulebook, unless you are unable to continue or need medical treatment.

A non-reportable injury is any other injury, self assessed, other than where a fencer is injured and is unable to continue or needs treatment from a health professional. This would be where you would report small cuts, abrasions, and bruises, should you consider them significant. I think we’ve all had bruises from fencing under the full set of fencing equipment rules.

Further, any reportable injuries must be reported to the Group Marshal “as soon as possible”, who must then also report the incident to the Kingdom Rapier Marshal
“within 24 hours”. I have seen incidents in the experiment reporting schedule that people believe to be reportable, but these are not being passed on to the Group
Marshal or myself. Please ensure that incident reporting requirements are properly adhered to.

20 Feb 2023 – Reduced armour experiment announcement time – WE ARE LIVE!

Good afternoon fencers!

One of the most significant changes to fencing in Lochac since the reintroduction has finally come to pass, and you, lucky reader, are invited to participate!
Details, including how to participate, can be found in the linked Google Doc at the end of this missive, but as a summary:

EXPERIMENTAL RULES

There are three areas of reduced armor that this experiment will be examining. Participants are limited to using two of the below at the same time. Participants may decide each time they armor up which one or two areas they wish to use reduced armor on.

These areas are:

  • Lowering the required back of head protection from penetration resistant to abrasion resistant. Essentially, the drape would not need to be drop tested, and a single layer of cloth would suffice as long as no skin shows.
  • Lowering the torso protection from penetration resistant to abrasion resistant. A single layer of cloth will be sufficient; it would not need to be drop tested, and no additional armpit layers will be necessary as long as there is no exposed skin.
  • Allowing arms and legs to have exposed skin. The arms from just above the elbows and down and the legs from just above the knees down may be exposed – essentially, the areas exposed by a t-shirt and shorts. Note that unless the option for reduced torso armor is chosen as well, the armor standard for the torso remains unchanged. Yes, this means that gloves would not be required.

PARTICIPATION AND REPORTING

A participant can sign up using the below link. A participant is not confirmed and cannot
take part until approval by Lochac rapier Marshal.
https://forms.gle/wCkvqP2MGSYrP5Jy9

A participant must report using the below form each time they undertake a fencing activity
using these rules.

Important note:
Sign up data will remain within Australia and New Zealand and be protected by relevant privacy laws and principals. However, event and incident reporting data will be sent directly to the Society officers responsible for the global experiment. While the data can be accessed by Lochac officers (including the Kingdom Fencing Marshal, Kingdom Earl Marshal, and SCA Ltd Board), it is not controlled by these officers. Your data may not have the same privacy protections as data collected under Australian or New Zealand law. If you do not wish your data managed in this way, you will not be able to proceed with the experiment.

21 Jan 2023 – Conclusion of the inner thigh requirement saga

Good morning all!

The necessary Boards, Committees, Kings and Seneschals have all given their approval to permanently change the Lochac Fencing Combat Handbook to
permanently remove the requirement to armour 10cm down the inner thigh, and this has been promulgated through Pegasus, to group marshals, and has been
announced at Court. Even the Fencing Combat Handbook has been changed!

We have now *permanently *removed ’the inner thigh’ from the definition of the parts of the body that must be covered by penetration-resistant
material under 2.8.4 1.

No action needs to be taken by fencers. Your current legal armour remains legal and does not need to be changed. You will hear nothing further from
me on this matter!

YiS,
Sigvaldr

12 July 2021 – From the Kingdom Fencing Marshal: Safety tests

Greetings friends,

Your group marshals are now preparing their quarterly reports, and in the next quarter we will call for nominations as I prepare to step down. That means
it’s almost two years since I stepped up. If you can’t remember doing your two-year safety tests on your gear during my tenure, then now is the time. All blades,
masks and penetration-resistant clothing must be tested every two years, in accordance with the rules. I encourage group marshals to maintain a record of the tests, and remind them to report any blade failures.

FURTHER…I have recently had received a report of a failure. A blunt was removed from a blade in apparently good condition during a tape replacement. The marshals found that the tip of the blade was severely rusted. In response, please follow this instruction. All blades undergoing flex tests must also have their
blunts removed to check that the whole blade is in good condition. If your blade has been tested, but you have not recently re-taped your blunt, I ask that you check your tips. Thanks for your support. Any questions, you know how to find me.

15 May 2021 – Minor changes to the Lochac Fencing Combat Rules
Notice from the Kingdom Fencing Marshal

Thank you to members of the community who have provided feedback or queries about the new Lochac Fencing Rules. As a result, I am releasing the Lochac Fencing Rules 5.1. The updated version includes some minor changes to wording to clarify rules and the change log.

1 May 2021 – New Lochac Fencing Combat Rules
Notice from the Kingdom Fencing Marshal

Effective from 1 May 2021, the Lochac Fencing Rules 5.0 are in force. All fencers, trainees and marshals must familiarise themselves with the new rules.

The following are key changes to weapons and authorisations:

Rubber-headed spears on rattan shafts, as described in the Rules, are no longer experimental weapons. All fencers can train with, and undertake authorisation in, this weapon.
Steel-headed spears (rapier pikes) are still allowed under Society rules until 31 December 2021.
Cut and thrust combat is allowed in melee combat, if all fencers are wearing cut and thrust equipment.
There is no longer a waiting period to authorise in cut and thrust combat, or to use a spear. Anyone with a standard fencing combat authorisation can undertake authorisation in these categories.
There are no longer specific categories for authorising marshals. An authorising marshal can authorise fencers for any category in which they hold the relevant combat authorisation.

22 February 2015 – Updated Victorian Sword Laws

Hiya Folks

The following is a Victorian requirement only covering steel sword usage (including the transport, wearing and even holding a steel sword) within Victoria.

Shortly all steel sword users will need to have completed the new stat dec requirements and hold a current SCA membership to transport, use and own a steel sword in Victoria. The previous laws covered the transport and ownership of the sword yet the updated laws also covers the “usage”.

I’m aware there has been some confusion about the inclusion of usage in the updated laws which has resulted in newcomers being allowed to use a steel sword for basic drill work. Under the current phasing in of the laws we can’t allow a newcomer to use a steel sword until the stat dec process has been completed and a current SCA membership card is held.

So to be very clear, newcomers can’t use a steel sword and anyone that knowingly allows a newcomer to use a steel blade places the SCA exemption at risk and as such will face disciplinary action/authorisation card removal.

I strongly suggest all Victorian based fencing groups arrange loaner fibreglass rapiers to assist newcomers.

The Coup de Edmund

by Don Dameon Greybeard
published 15 Dec 2017

My first S.C.A. event was Rowany Festival 1986, but even before that time I had made Edmund’s acquaintance through the same group of friends that dragged me along to that event (for my own good, or so they said).

I attended the occasional event and then at another festival, I think 1988, while for a variety of personal reasons and a lack of anything better to do, I was attempting to drain the tavern single handed, Edmund talked me into attending my first rapier practice. I have much to thank him for besides the pleasure that I have taken in the combat and friends I have made through it.

In 1991 I attended the first Ynys Fawr Baronial Investiture, Edmund was there as well and classes were conducted (I know, Edmund teaching, what a surprise). It was at this event that Edmund achieved renown by having a particular cutting attack named after him, it occurred during a demonstration bout, I had thrust in a low line attack to Edmund’s left abdomen, he parried my blade down and moved to place himself off line. What actually occurred however was that my blade ended between his legs and I had my hand on his forte. We paused for a moment, then I saw the look of realization on his face, and, with a smile on my face that went from ear to ear, I turned my back on him while raising my sword until positive pressure was achieved and walked off the field without looking back.

This play was henceforth known as the “Coup de Edmund”, no one laughed louder or longer than he did that day or on each occasion when the tale was retold.

Thank you for listening to an old mans fond memory of a friend.

Don Dameon Greybeard, Ancient Guild Master of Fence.
