History

The son borne by Hope, the daughter of the preceding king Guyon, from the embrace of the war-god Mars was condemned by Queen Spite, the then present ruler of Burley, to be cast into the river. The queen’s servants took the child and carried him from Burley as far as the forest on the Black Hill; but when they tried to descend the hill to the river, to carry out the command, they found that the river had risen, and they were unable to reach its bed. They therefore thrust the tub with the child into the shallow water at the shore. It floated for a while; but the water promptly receded, and knocking against a stone, the tub capsized, and the screaming infant was upset into the river mud. He was heard by a she-Griffin who had just brought forth and had her udders full of milk; she came and gave her teats to the boy, to nurse him, and as he was drinking she licked him clean with her tongue. Above him flew a Pegasus, which guarded the child, and also carried food to him. The father was providing for his son: for the Griffin and the Pegasus are animals consecrated to father Mars. This was seen by one of the town herdsmen, who were driving pigs back to the pasture from which the water had receded. Startled by the spectacle, he summoned his mates, who found the she-Griffin attending like a mother to the child, and the child treated her as his mother. The men made a loud noise to scare the animal away; but the Griffin was not afraid; she left the child, but not from fear; slowly, without heeding the herdsmen, she disappeared into the wilderness of the forest, at the holy site of Faunus, where the water gushes from a gully of the mountain. Meanwhile the men picked up the boy and carried them to the chief swineherd of the city fathers of Politarchopolis, for they believed that the gods did not wish the child to perish. But the old fencing master of France had just released his last apprentice and was full of sorrow. The city fathers gave him the boy, and he fostered and raised the child, and named him François.

In time the boy grew into a man, and he left his old master to seek his fortune. During his travels he found a grumpy and lame ape, which he befriended. The two companions continued on and found a wondrous Society, built of dreams and high ideals. They beheld this wonder and felt it was good, however François was puzzled. The members of this Society proclaimed to be wondrous fighters, however they did not use any of the gentle art or noble science he had learnt in his youth from the old fencing master. Bemused, he pondered this dilemma, where upon he was struck with inspiration from mighty Mars in the form of a vision. When he awoke he did relate the vision to his companion who agreed it was a worthy and noble vision. The two then laboured mightily, forming rules to bind men, and weapons with which they could practice in safety, and finally convinced the King over the waters that this vision should come to fruition. Thus was fencing born in Lochac, and the two did go forth and preach the noble cause. One day during this quest, François did find a lonely sad Englishman deep in his cups, bent upon his own destruction at the tables of The Tavern. In purest charity, François did raise up the Englishman, and tell him of his vision which filled the Englishman with strength and purpose, and he joined with François as the third companion, and he too began preaching of the wonders of the art and science of fence.

Some may call this myth and some may call this truth. What we do know is that for this vision, charity and hard labour he is called the First True Don of Lochac.

On the 1st of Oct AS XXXIII (1998), Their Royal Majesties Jade & Siobhan did officially recognise the West Kingdom Royal Guild of Fence, and did elevate François Henri Guyon to the rank of Ancient Guildmaster.

On the 19th of April, AS XXXVII (2003), Their Royal Majesties Cornelius and Morwynna did elevate François Henri Guyon to the Order of the White Scarf of Lochac. The scarf given to Don François was the scarf received by Adib ibn Jelal from Don Tivar Moondragon, recognising François as the First True Don of Lochac.

On the 28th November, AS L (2015), Their Royal Majesties Steffan and Branwen did elevate François Henri Guyon to the Order of Defence as one of the masters of the Order.

History

I began fencing at the end of 2017 learning longsword with a local hema school. When I was introduced to the SCA in 2019 I first picked up a rapier, discovering a love for both our game and for finding the ways that different fencing systems fit together. I played my Free Scholars prize in 2019 at Great Southern Gathering in Innilgard, teaching a class on the not so subtle art of 15th century German dagger fighting and my Provost in 2021 at the Innilgard Guild of Defence Day. My focus is on teaching, especially at the Intermediate to advanced level.

On the 7th Day of November AS LIV (2021) Dytryk Lehrer, sponsored by Provost Kit Hackforth and Guildmaster William Blackwoode, did play his Provost’s Prize. The candidate was duly examined in single sword, sword and buckler, sabre, spear, and longsword by Provosts Haos Windchaser, Gregory Tortouse de Sloleye, Aylwin Greymane, and Kit Hackforth, and Guildmaster William Blackwoode. Further by special invitation, Journeyman Ulrich of innilgard, and Yevan De leeds were also asked to examine the candidate. After careful deliberation, the body of examiners did agree that Dytryk Lehrer did successfully play the prize and elevated him to the rank of Provost.

On the 19th day of October AS LIX (2024) at the Royal Retreat of Art and Valour II, Their Royal Majesties King Bain and Queen Iglesia did elevate Dytryk Lehrer to the Order of Defence. Master Dytryk did receive two collars at the time of his elevation. The first unadorned was one he received from James of Southron Gaard, who received it from Emrys Tudor, who received it from William de Cameron, who received it as one of the original collars made for the founding of the Order. The second collar contained a medallion with the symbol of the Order, which was received from Lucius Cornelius Gordianus, who received it from Dameon Greybeard.

History

It was a dark and stormy night, but Emrys Tudur was a man used to being rained on. Emrys has been in re-enactment in one form or another since the early 1980s in England, mainly with the Sealed Knot and other English Civil War groups. Having moved to New Zealand, Emrys became part of the newly founded Shire of Ildhafn and has been here ever since. Emrys co-launched Rapier in the Crescent Isles along with William de Cameron. At this time the Shires and Baronies of New Zealand were in debate to decide if they would stay with Caid or move to the soon to be formed Kingdom of Lochac. So with this in mind, William and Emrys hedged their bets, with William making contacts and authorising in Lochac and Emrys doing the same in Caid. Since then both have been involved with the Western Martial Arts movement in New Zealand, which has allowed us to learn and teach a more period style, which we have continued to do to this day. Emrys travels on business regularly and takes his rapier gear along at every opportunity to teach or just fight.

On the 6th of November AS XXXIX (2004), Their Royal Majesties Draco and Serena did elevate Emrys Tudur to the Lochac Company of Archers.

On Sunday the 5th of February ASXXXX (2006), at Canterbury Faire, Scholar Emrys Tudwr, sponsored by Guildmaster ibn Jelal, did play his Journeyman’s Prize in the following weapons: rapier and buckler; rapier and parrying gauntlet; and rapier and dagger. The candidate was examined by Journeyman Luan an Fael, Provost Somerled of Redcliffe, and Guildmaster ibn Jelal. Upon due consideration his examiners did declare him successful, and elevated him to the rank of Journeyman.

On Friday the 6th of April ASXXXXI (2007), at Rowany Festival, Journeyman Emrys Tudur, sponsored by Guildmaster ibn Jelal, did play his Provost’s Prize in the following weapons: Rapier; Rapier and Dagger; Rapier and Cloak; Rapier and Rotella; and Rapier and Baton. The candidate was examined by Provost Owain Cantor ap Hughe, Provost Diccon Shorthand, Provost Gregory Tortouse de Sloleye, Guildmaster Francois Henri Guyon, Guildmaster Caleb Adolphous and Guildmaster Angus Galbraith. His examiners did agree that the Journeyman had most successfully played the Prize and did acknowledge and elevate him to the rank of Provost.

On the 22nd of March AS XLII (2008), during some fearsome rain, Their Royal Majesties Berengar and Bethan did elevate Emrys Tudur to the Order of the White Scarf of Lochac. The scarf given to Don Emrys was the scarf received by Don Aylwin from Don Dameon who received it from HRM Britta, Queen of Ansteorra. Due to the fearsome rain, he is forever known as Rain Don!

On Sunday the 31st of March AS XLVII (2013) the Body of Guildmasters, did issue leave and licence to Provost Emrys Tudor, to play his Guildmasters Prize against all Guildmasters in their subtle mystery at these weapons, viz Sword & Buckler, Longsword, Rapier & Cloak, Case of Rapier, Rapier & Parrying Gauntlet, Rapier & Dagger, and Rapier. Said Provost was present upon the field at Rowany Festival at the allotted time on Sunday afternoon, and was examined by Guildmasters ibn Jelal, Owain Cantor ap Hughe, Dameon Greybeard, Henry Fox, Silfren the Singer, Caleb Adolphus and William Blackwood. After due consideration, his examiners did decide that the Prize had been achieved, and did elevate Emrys to the rank of Guildmaster. The new Guildmaster was presented in Court to our Patrons Felix & Eva, Crown of Lochac, where he did receive Guildmaster ibn Jelal’s black scarf as a symbol of his new rank.

On the 19th of January, AS LI (2017), Their Royal Majesties Ariston and Lilavati did recognise their subject Emrys Tudor, and did elevate him to the Order of Defence as one of the Masters of the Order. The collar he received was from William de Cameron, who received it as one of the original collars made for the founding of the Order.

Edmund the Lame

Master of Defence, Don, Ancient Guildmaster (Deceased)

History

In the world before fencing Primal chaos reigned, Heaven sought order, but the Pegasus can fly only when its feathers are grown. The SCA Kingdoms formed again and yet again, as endless aeons wheeled and passed. Time and the pure essences of Heaven, The moistures of the Earth, and the powers of the Sun and the Moon all worked upon a certain rock – old as Creation, and it became magically fertile. That first egg was named Emotion, and Odin, the Father God, said ‘With our emotions we shake the world’. Elemental forces caused the egg to hatch, from it then came a Lame Ape.

The nature of Edmund was GRUMPY!

In time he was befriended by a wandering Frenchman, who imparted to him a vision of a Society with fencing as one of its martial endeavours. Labouring hard, they wrote rules, developed weapons, and eventually received approval to start fencing in Lochac.

Edmund has travelled widely, and lived in several parts of Lochac and the Known World. He is one of the founders for fencing in Stormhold and then Riverhaven, as well as kickstarting programs in other Baronies such as Innilgard.

On the 1st of Oct AS XXXIII (1998), Their Royal Majesties Jade & Siobhan did officially recognise the West Kingdom Royal Guild of Fence, and did elevate Edmund the Lame to the rank of Ancient Guildmaster.

On the 16th of May, AS XLIV (2009), Their Royal Majesties Vik and Inga did elevate Edmund the Lame to the Order of the White Scarf of An Tir. One of the scarves he received that day was from his student Don Henry Fox, which was the scarf received by Don François, who received it from Adib ibn Jelal, who received it from Don Tivar Moondragon.

To the Great Regret of the entire Guild of Defence and Lochac’s fencing community, Don Edmund passed from this world on the 5th of January 2014 after battling with cancer.

On the 14th day of March AS LI (2017), Their Royal Majesties of Avacal, Albrecht von Rügen and Munya bint Halima al-Rakkasa al-Nashita, did posthumously elevate Edmund the Lame to the Order of Defence, in recognition of the years of service he had provided to Their Kingdom.

History

Dameon first joined the SCA a long long time ago, in a Barony far far away. One day he stumbled out of the tavern to be cajoled by Don Francois to join into the fencing, as a way of filling in time between drinks. This fateful day saw his life changed irrevocably, as his time and finances became increasingly consumed by his fencing habit.

In AS XX (1995) Dameon took on the office of Lochac Principality Rapier Marshal, continuing until the infamous West Kingdom Fencing Ban™ in AS XXI (1996). Dameon continued in the office under the title of Rapier Rules Research Deputy, and in ASXXIII (1998) with the return of legalised fencing once again resumed the office of Principality Rapier Marshal.

On the 1st of Oct AS XXXIII (1998), Their Royal Majesties Jade & Siobhan did officially recognise the West Kingdom Royal Guild of Fence, and did elevate Dameon Greybeard to the rank of Ancient Guildmaster.

On the 6th of July, AS XXXVII (2002), Their Royal Majesties Alfar and Elspeth did elevate Dameon Greybeard as one of the founders of the Order of the White Scarf of Lochac. The scarf given to Don Dameon was a gift from TRM Alfar & Elspeth, Crown of Lochac. Don Dameon did also receive a second scarf as a gift from HRM Britta, Queen of Ansteorra.

On the 2nd May, AS L (2015), Their Royal Majesties Kinggiyadai and Altani did elevate Dameon Greybeard to the Order of Defence as one of the 3 premier members of the Order.

On the 17th of April AS XL (2006), Their Royal Majesties Aedward and Yolande did elevate Caleb Adolphous to the Order of the White Scarf of Lochac. The scarf given to Don Caleb was a gift from Don François.

On the 12th of August AS XLI (2006), at the North of the Border Fencing Fest in Riverhaven, Provost Caleb Adolphous, sponsored by Lord Guildmaster Dameon Greybeard, and with the approval of the Body of Guildmasters, did play his Guildmaster’s Prize in the following weapons: case of rapier; rapier and dagger; rapier and parrying gauntlet; rapier and buckler; rapier and cloak; rapier and baton; and rapier. The candidate was examined by Guildmasters Silfren the Singer, Henry Fox, ibn Jelal and Edmund the Lame. At the conclusion of the forms, at the request of Their Excellencies the Baron and Baroness of River Haven, Provost Caleb faced Guildmaster Edmund in a final bout for the life of a hostage (played most ably by Provost Somerled of Redcliffe). The Guildmasters concluded that the candidate had most successfully played his Prize, and did raise Don Caleb Adolphus to the rank, privileges and responsibilities of Guildmaster in the Royal Guild of Defence in Lochac.

On the 2nd May, AS L (2015), Their Royal Majesties Kinggiyadai and Altani did elevate Caleb Adolphous to the Order of Defence as one of the 3 premier members of the Order.
